New Scotland Yard selects Bi-Steel for perimeter security wall

The Metropolitan Police selected Bi-Steel - a high performance steel/concrete composite material - manufactured and installed by Corus, for the perimeter security wall at its New Scotland Yard headquarters in central London. The 90m long Bi-Steel wall is a highly robust structure that provides unrivalled blast protection when compared with more traditional reinforced concrete solutions, incorporating several innovations to withstand the effects of a determined physical attack, and is part of a general security upgrade undertaken on the site by main contractor, Wates.

Corus Bi-Steel’s rapid construction is an additional benefit, achieved by pre-fabricating the basic wall units off-site and simply pinning them together and concrete filling on-site, over the course of just a few hours.  This feature is especially important in a busy city centre location, such as New Scotland Yard, where disruption must be kept to a minimum. 

Increased concern over security in the UK is leading to a reassessment of how buildings can be best protected from terrorist attack.  Over the last six months, Corus has seen a significant increase in enquiries from both public sector and private groups for its latest blast protection solutions, designed to provide the highest levels of protection.

Bi-Steel panels, offering unrivalled blast protection and blast containment, are used in the construction of buildings to protect vulnerable areas within them, such as data centres and areas housing hazardous materials, from attack.  Bi-Steel can also be used in the construction of permanent or temporary structures such as anti-attack vehicle barrier systems, designed to provide enhanced levels of perimeter protection at security-sensitive locations.
