The May edition of Professional Security magazine carried an article written by Dr Jurek Tolloczko, General Manager of Corus Bi-Steel, in which he discussed how to design structures to resist explosive blast. Dr Tolloczko has been involved in this specialist area for more than 15 years. His extensive experience in the field has included the design of offshore and mainland structures to withstand the effects of accidental and deliberate explosions. In his Professional Security piece Dr Tolloczko discusses in depth all aspects of designing a facility to withstand explosive blast. This covers several areas including the physical strengthening of the structure by way of blast resistant walls and the provision of stand off protection in the form of access barriers or security walls. Careful design of the facility to reduce the risk of an attack is important and the dispersal of potential target areas throughout the site to make them less obvious should be a high priority.
